HAPPENING NOW @ SCUBA  2000!!"
1. Scuba 2000 Update
After over 13 years with the same web design, we're rebuilding it completely. We'll be modernizing many of the features and adding a lot of new ideas too.
Don't worry! It will still be easy to navigate without a lot of useless videos and music making it messy.
Along with that we'll be changing the weekly What's News format too. I see now that it's worth the work but I'm hoping to make it easier to produce yet more practical and more fun for the divers.

2. Newly Certified Divers - Looking to Dive?
We have a local dive every weekend and most are suitable for your new divers. One of the most popular dive sites is Penetang and we go there every 3 weeks or so. The water is warm, clear and the wrecks are shallow. It's the perfect dive site for new divers to build their experience. Penetang is just a 2 hour drive from Toronto and the wrecks are among the best we dive on.
Check the Sport Dive Schedule for a date and give us a call.

3. New Divers - Looking to Dive?
Every weekend now we have new divers going out to join our leadership team and make their first dives. Centennial Beach in Barrie, Kirkfield Quarry and Tobermory are the favorite locations for great diving in this area but we also can meet you to enjoy the wrecks in Penetang, the wall at Big Bay Point or the falls in Bala. Check the schedules and give us a call. We've been taking small groups of just 3 or 4 divers too. Call us. Let's go diving!!
NOTICE  New Divers & Certified Divers
The Scuba 2000 summer dive schedule is out!!
We have 2 schedules - one for our Tobermory weekends which are designed for new diver certification but are open as well to certified divers looking for great diving or for Advanced Training and one for our Sport Dives which may be weekend or single day trips. Both new divers looking to make their first dives or certified divers are welcome on all of these too.
Many, many divers have been calling to sign up for both Certification Dives and Sport Dives.
It looks like it's going to be a busy summer! Great!!

Lots of Great Courses - Don't Miss Out!!
Lots of Great Courses @ S2KEach month we offer several interesting scuba courses most of which give you PADI certification. Remember that you can combine courses into a training package that saves you money (specialties are as little as $93.00 -1/2 price) and you do not pay in advance. Pay as you learn. We will be posting a 2-month calendar in the Training Section to show all scheduled courses. Please note that we can offer any Specialty Diving Course available. If you have a particular course you'd like to take, let us know and we'll try to arrange it. We do need to have at least 6 participants.

Weekly Scuba Specials at Scuba 2000
Big Savings
"Every Friday the Pro Shop will feature a special sale item at an unbeatable price - often at 1/2 the regular price!! The item will be available ONLY on the Friday and must be purchased and paid for that day either in person or by phone. WE MAY LIMIT PURCHASES TO ONE ITEM PER CUSTOMER."

Weekly Special for Friday, June 26, 2009

Every dive traveler comes home from their dive trip with stories about the diver who got sunburned. Few things are more upsetting. It's painful, can stop you from diving or from any other fun on the trip and, of course, the long-term harm is well known.
Several dive companies have excellent products designed to protect the divers from the sun. Akona's Sun Guard is one of the best. They're attractive, very comfortable, rugged and easy to put on. These usually sell for $49 but on Friday you can have one for just $29.
It could save you an embarrassing and painful experience on your next trip.
Some readers have commented about our weekly special and that it's only on Friday which is hard for them. So call in and buy it in full by phone. We'll hold it for you. You simply have to buy it on the Friday - not pick it up. Have fun!!

Congratulations
Congratulations to David Racioppa and Jason Serroul who have just completed the Scubapro Factory Technician's Course and the Sherwood Repair Clinic. Both are now authorized to service both of these top brands of scuba gear.
SCUBA SHORTS

The Limited Lifetime Warranty for defects in materials and workmanship will still be in effect, if the rules above are followed."

Notice to Sitech valve owners (includes Bare valves):

WARNING
UPDATED PRESS RELEASE! APRIL 3rd 2009!

IMPORTANT RECALL NOTICE! SI TECH DRY SUIT INFLATION HOSE SUBJECT TO RECALL FOR REMOVAL OF PLASTIC FLOW RESTRICTING INSERT!

• DO NOT dive with a hose subject to this recall (or any other equipment that has been connected to such a hose) until the insert has been removed by knowledgeable service personnel.

Please call Scuba 2000 if you think you have equipment affected by either of these recalls.

Happy Canadians in Bahamas
Here's a picture of the group of Scuba 2000 divers who were at the Legends of Diving event in Grand Bahamas last month. Obviously they were relaxed and having a great time. Notice the bright light shining around Diana's head. She sure does brighten up a picture!

Scuba 2000 Sponsors Beach Clean-Up
A small but very enthusiastic group of divers and their friends took part in a beach clean-up in downtown Toronto recently. Spurred on by the great weather, their mission and of course, some prizes from Scuba 2000, the group managed to gather a lot of garbage and make at last one small part of the beaches a nicer place to be. Thanks to Sarah Moffat and the whole group from us at Scuba 2000.
Seen In the Pro Shop!
There are always little changes and additions being made to the Scuba 2000 dive store. Some are pretty neat. Others are important. Each time we know of one or spot one ourselves, we'll point it out here for you all to explore next time you're in.

The HUD Mask is here!!
The Aeris Compumask HUD that we featured a few weeks back as a new product has had a universal affect on everyone who's seen it. To quote David White, Joel Pomerantz, Brian Graham, Mike McCabe, Greg Vaysman and a dozen more, "Wow!".

Artifact Display Gets a New, Royal Addition.
A First Class Section China Dinner Plate from the wreck of the "Empress of Ireland" is now in the front display for everyone to gawk at.
I've had this plate for many years but I've always kept it secreted away - partly because of it's intrinsic value and partly because of the controversy surrounding the wreck and the items taken from it.
However, the plate is beautiful and it's a shame to hide it. My possession of this item is recorded and legal and I think it's as secure in the front display as it was where I have been keeping .
Look at this rare scuba diving artifact, read the description and, even better, read about the Empress of Ireland on one of the hundreds of websites devoted to her.
No, I will NOT be organizing a dive trip to this site.
Great Diving Trips Planned Just For You!!

We have some very exciting diving vacations planned just for you. We are currently offering a fabulous trip below. For details, check out the Travel Section of our web site or call Scuba 2000. Note: All travel services are arranged by and paid through Carlson-Wagonlit Travel TICO # 2927509

LAST CHANCE FOR MED-RED!!
As we thought, the Scuba 2000 Med-Red Dive Trip is very popular. In fact, we have filled the original spots already. 12 lucky divers are going to have the dive travel experience of their lives.
We have been able to get 4 more spaces on this trip but note that we have a waiting list of "wanna' go's" with almost 20 names on it.
If you're interested, now is the time to speak up!
Call Di or Alec anytime for more information.

Med-Red Trip
" The Med-Red trip, a term we developed to describe this fantastic dive excursion, is generating a lot of excitement. 'Med-Red' means that we will be visiting and diving both the Mediterranean and the Red Sea in a single trip.
It seems so obvious now looking at a map but we think this is the 1st Med-Red Group Dive Trip ever organized! Because of all the special activities planned, we can accommodate only a small group and already have several firm reservations. Call us with any questions.

Simply put, this dive trip will combine the best diving of the Mediterranean with the best diving of the Red Sea PLUS last-based tours of both Ancient Greece and of the even older Egypt - the Egypt of the Pharaohs."

Med Red Travel with Scuba 2000

Exciting Dive Trip Plans for 2009!!

We are actively working on Dive Trips to the following destinations for you:
1. Med/Red
- 2 weeks + - Athens and Santorini, Greece. Then to Cairo & the Red Sea. History & world-class diving with Alec & Diana
September 25 - October 11
2. Catalina Island, California - 4 days of diving in the Kelp Forests is "unbelievable"! November 09
New Product Review!
The new materials used in wet suit production are nothing short of amazing in my eyes.
My first wet suit, which cost $9.95 USD, was a DIY (do it yourself for those under 50!) kit that I purchased from Honest Archie of Central Skindivers in Jamaica, New York. It was a roll of black neoprene, a large sheet of  Kraft paper, a pencil, rubber glue and instructions. I laid on the paper while my mom traced around me and we put it together. There's a picture of me in it on my office wall.
Wet suits did improve but until very recently, getting into your wet suit was the most troublesome thing about going diving.
Now the materials used are so stretchy that even those without a "perfect" body can easily slide in or out. Plus they're warm and they look good too!
The stretchiest models cost a bit more but most divers are so happy with them that the extra is of no concern.

Bare, one of the largest wet suit manufacturers in Canada, has a new wet suit called the Elastek that may be the best one yet. It comes in several styles but the 1 piece Jump Suit meets all of the qualities listed above, easy to use, good looking and warm, plus it's very affordable too.
Come and see this new suit at Scuba 2000 soon. We think you'll be impressed too.

Vintage Scuba @ S2K
Vintage Scuba @S2KScuba 2000 is special because we have an incredible resource in Alec's vintage gear collection. Not only is it considered one of the largest and finest anywhere but Alec shares his knowledge, experiences and his vintage equipment with anyone interested. Many of the items are very unique and a lot are extremely rare. In this spot each week, we'll feature a piece of scuba memorabilia whether scuba gear, personal gear, scuba diving accessories or maybe one of Alec's hundreds of scuba related items like Sea Hunt promotional pieces, movie posters, diving games and lots more. It's sure to interest you and many will amaze you.

This week's vintage item is very special to me and to any diver interested in the origins of scuba. Here's a picture of the first mask ever made in the US. There were only about 40 of these masks made and each one was hand made by Charlie Sturgill in California. He made them for his diving buddies and aside from the slight variations in style (round or oval, etc) they were shaped to fit the wearers face. Charlie made them from 6" very thick, rubber tubing and added a glass and a stainless steel ring with clips attached for the cut rubber strap. They were a far cry from the masks we use today but they were the first and the best at that time. It is estimated that there are only 3 or 4 survivors - Laura (Charlie's daughter) has one, Dr. Sam Miller of Pismo Beach, California (Patron of Scuba 2000) has one and my own. As a collectors item they are the Holy Grail of vintage scuba - never available! They are usually left to a friend or family member. A value is hard to establish but $1000US would not be hard to believe.
See lots of neat old scuba stuff at www.vintagescuba.com
Scuba 2000 is Still the Diver's Choice!!

In a recent, world-wide on-line survey of divers, Scuba 2000 was rated as one of the best dive facilities in the world. We can now display the Diversclick Award logo on all our literature. Thanks for your support.

S2K Thought for the Day
"Good judgment comes from bad experiences - and most of that comes from bad judgment"
Just for Fun!!

Just for Fun!!

Birthdays Are Great at Scuba 2000!!

Birthdays are Great!!
We started having Scuba Splash Birthday Parties several years ago and they are now a regular feature of Friday evenings in our pool. We can take up to 9 guests and they enjoy a complete scuba diving introductory in the pool after which we have a party room, pizza, pop, birthday cake and prizes for everyone (have you heard Diana sing Happy Birthday?). Everyone simply loves it including the parents who often join in but who at least like the idea of not having a mess to clean up at home. Think about it and if someone you know is having a birthday, give us a call. By the way, it's not just for kids birthdays!!

Tip of the Week
We have lots of very experienced divers at S2K and they're happy to share their knowledge with all divers. We've arranged for these experts to give us one good 'Tip' in their area of expertise for each future issue of the What's News and you'll find it here. More categories may appear. If you have any questions, suggestions or arguments about these tips, direct them to the authors. Click on the contributor's name to send your feedback! We want to hear from you! Let us know what you think!

Photography - by Alec Peirce
A hard shell case, like the Pelican case (indestructible) is the preferred method of carrying your expensive camera gear. These cases offer the greatest protection for traveling and on the dive boat. They are lifetime guaranteed, fully water and pressure proof, they float, they fit under an airplane seat and they hold your complete system plus lots of extras.

Dive Travel - by Alec Peirce
Two things that I always take with me on a dive trip are a mesh bag and a dry bag. The mesh bag makes carrying my gear on and off the boat much easier. The travel bag is just too big and cumbersome to fit on many dive boats easily. It also makes rinsing my gear a heck of a lot easier! I can dump the whole bag in the rinse bucket (or resort pool - shhh!) and carry it back to my room without having to unpack and pack! Once back to where it will spend the night, I can unpack it to dry. The dry bag is a life-saver, especially on a wet, windy day! I know I will have a dry towel and dry clothes no matter what the weather is like.

Instruction - by Diana Stanborough PADI Master Instructor
Nothing makes you look less professional than being sloppy or poorly dressed. If you are hoping to gain your students confidence and respect your personal image will certainly help. First impressions go a long way! Your image won't cover up a poor attitude or poor skills but it will certainly get you off to a good start.
Most training facilities have a 'uniform' that identifies you as staff and provides the consistent, professional 'look' that they would like to present to students.

Skills and Safety - by Diana Stanborough PADI Master Instructor
We've talked about this many times already but once again, you can't check your equipment enough! A thorough buddy check can save you embarrassment or much worse. Divers tend to give their buddy a once over by simply looking at everything. That's not enough. Can you tell by looking at your buddy if their air is actually turned on? Can you tell if the low pressure inflator is attached correctly? Test everything! Too many times divers enter the water without having their air turned on!

Equipment -by Alec Peirce
Did you know that it's easy and inexpensive to be able to see clearly underwater? Most brands of masks have 2 or 3 models that allow for prescription lenses! With the store assistance you can choose one of those models (one that fits you well), leave us your prescription and we will order and install the new lenses. Your lens may be in stock or at most, a wait of a few days. At Scuba 2000, we even give a lifetime guarantee so if your prescription changes, you don't pay for new lens. Easy!
