| Scuba 2000 Goes Racing to Help Kids |
You may be aware that Scuba 2000 has been a big supporter of the Starlight Foundation over the years. They provide funds to help a terminally ill child have some fun. We've raised thousands of dollars over the years for The Starlight Foundation. Our plaques can be seen near the front door of the store. At the moment, Scuba 2000 is helping promote the efforts of the Wal Mart/Tide Racing team raise money for the Children's Miracle Network. To date they've raised 5.7 million dollars! The race team is touring the various Wal Marts around Canada for that purpose. Visit Wal-Mart.ca for more information and hopefully you'll get to meet the racers and help this very worthy cause. Here's Alec with the race team (Ford of course) in Richmond Hill. |

|
| Why Buy Scubapro - Sherwood? |
There are many reasons why Scuba 2000 favors scuba equipment from these 2 vary well-known companies. They have everything! They are generous and easy to deal with. They are competitive. Their products are great!
But there is another reason - one that is of greatest value to you, the diver.
Both Sherwood and Scubapro have the most generous warrantee and parts replacement programs of all the scuba manufacturers. With some limitations, air delivery systems from these 2 companies have a Lifetime Warrantee AND a Free Parts Program.
In the case of Scubapro, the Free Replacement Parts program is for life.
The bottom line is that they guarantee their products and supply required service parts.
The limitations I referred to are simple and consistent too. All companies require annual service to keep the warrantee in place. The purchase must be registered with the company, on-line or by mail A record of annual service must be kept. This can be done on-line for Sherwood although receipts are fine for either company. Note that the warrantee applies ONLY to the original owner.
What does this mean to you?
Typically, an annual service costs about $50 to $60 barring unforeseen problems. That covers a complete service of the first and second stage of the regulator. Any additional service is extra - safe second, gauge swivel pin, computer batteries, etc.
Typically, service kits for the regulator cost about $50 to $60 - about $40 for the first stage and $20 for the second.
Therefore, annual service for a Sherwood or Scubapro air delivery system will cost you $50 per year.
For other regulators which do not give free parts, the cost will be $100 per year.
Include the safe second and the costs increase another $20 for service and another $20 for parts - a total of $140 without parts, $70 with.
In just 5 years, you will still have a perfect air delivery system AND have saved at least $350 - roughly 1/2 the cost of a regulator.
Many divers neglect their regulators and do not have annual service - partly because of the cost. The free parts encourages the diver to have it done - his regulator is like new all the time. If he decides to sell, the record of service plus the condition of the regulator will guarantee a better price.
Aha!! So you've not kept up your annual service!
Did you know that you can reinstate the original warrantee? Even if it's not been serviced for a few years!
Worth thinking about.

| WEEKLY
SCUBA QUIZ AT SCUBA 2000 |
Each
week on 'What's News' we'll have a Scuba Quiz which will feature
a question, a puzzle, a mind-teaser, a 'What Am I?' or some other
type of contest. Have Fun!!
|
Congratulations to Derrick Allday and Brad Coverdale who had the right answers. Canada's Farce Party is called Rhinoceros Party; a Calgary Red-Eye is a drink of beer and tomato juice; pencil crayons, Duo-Tang and scribbler are all items known only to Canadian students; the seemingly inedible Newfie pie is called bang-belly and there are 13 provinces and territories in Canada today.

There is a class of fish(?) that has no stomach, no appendages, no jaws, no vertebrate, no fins, no skeleton yet, they are still classified as fishes and have survived for 500 million years. All that and yet they have a TV series named after them! What are they called?

| Here's your chance to be creative! Each week we'll publish a picture
taken at a Scuba 2000 dive from the distant past, the recent past, the present and occasionally,
the future. You may recognize the divers or not. You may know
the dive site or not. Your job is to make an appropriate (or inappropriate)
title for the picture. We'll decide which entry is the best title
for that picture. The picture and the title with the winners name
will be published in the next What's News. |
|
The best titles for this neat picture are: |
1. "Message from space: "I come in Reef"". by Jennifer Naish
2. "Who's the U-Boat captain?" by Barry Middleton
3. "Now it's safe for the captain to go down with his ship!" by Liam Brown.

| Hollywood Display at Scuba 2000!! |
Hollywood has always enjoyed the excitement, danger and lure of scuba diving and well over 1000 movies have been made that featured scuba divers. Many of the movies were based solely on a scuba diving theme - the Deep for example.
I have many of the original movie posters from those productions and recently I've started to frame them and display them on our Hollywood Wall at Scuba 2000. Walk into the store, turn around and look up. All of these posters are original and some are fairly valuable to either scuba or Hollywood memorabilia collectors. The posters range in size from the very large 3 sheet (no longer used) to the 1 sheet (as in use today) and even poster card size (no longer used). Some of these posters are from movies made in the early 1950's (The Sea Around Us 1953) - some are more recent (Easy Come Easy Go with Elvis Presley 1967).
They're all really neat to look at. The attempt to make the underwater world seem dangerous is amusing too. I hope you like them and ask any questions you may have. |
|
 |
|
| Mystery Dive Site!! |
Each
week in this spot you'll find an underwater picture. It could
be a reef, an animal, a wreck, a rock formation or some other
easily identifiable underwater feature. Guess where the picture
was taken and you're a winner!! You must be precise. A picture
of the wreck of the Balboa would require the answer Grand Cayman.
Just answering 'in the Caribbean' would not do! Have
Fun!! |
|
| Last Week's Mystery Dive site: |
|
Yep! Believe it or not, a crayfish and a couple of rocks is recognizable! This was taken in Dave's Bay, Tobermory.
Congrats to Brad Coverdale, Barry Middleton and Chris Red Lovett.
|
|
|
|
| Where is this photo taken? |
|

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Comment: If someone took an underwater picture at a well-known dive site of a couple of divers doing something silly and they had a weird piece of scuba gear on, we could have a "Mystery Dive Site/Name That Picture/ What Is It?" combo question! |

| New
Product Review! |
Diver or not, everyone will appreciate this First Aid/Emergency Kit. It is the most compact AND the most complete I've seen. The kit comes in a heavy vinyl bag for protection. The actual kit bag is strong nylon and opens easily with a strong zipper to reveal 5 separate pockets. Everything recommended for a basic rescue kit is inside PLUS candles, matches, emergency blanket and more. It has scissors, tweezers, latex gloves, sting medicine, antiseptic and a dozen different bandages. It's a great idea to have one in your car at all times and take while diving too. You'll be pleased with the price too.
Check it out soon at Scuba 2000.

| Birthdays
Are Great at Scuba 2000!! |
|

We started having Scuba Splash Birthday Parties several years
ago and they are now a regular feature of Friday evenings in
our pool. We can take up to 9 guests and they enjoy a complete
scuba diving introductory in the pool after which we have a
party room, pizza, pop, birthday cake and prizes for everyone
(have you heard Diana sing Happy Birthday?). Everyone simply
loves it including the parents who often join in but who at
least like the idea of not having a mess to clean up at home.
Think about it and if someone you know is having a birthday,
give us a call. By the way, it's not just for kids birthdays!! |

Photography -
by Tom
Wilson U/W Photographer and Instructor
As you learned in your open water course, objects under water
appear larger and closer than they actually are. This causes
a real problem for underwater photographers when they point
a flash where the subject "appears" to be. This causes
them to aim the strobe in front of the actual subject, lighting
up particles in the water and causing backscatter. To avoid
this you can use a strobe with a built-in modeling light, or
attach a normal dive light to the strobe so they both point
at the same spot. This also frees up a hand on a night dive
and reduces the amount of gear juggling necessary. Another option
is to use two laser pointers which intersect at a predetermined
focusing spot. This is a great technique which does not disturb
fish, and works very well for macro photography.
Dive Travel - by Laurie
Kennedy OWSI and World Diver
When you are traveling and out on a boat or on the shore for
a period time it is always important to consider the appropriate
sun protection. This applies to both warm and cold destinations.
The following are a list of tips you should remember:
- Don't forget to bring along protective
clothing, such as a hat, t-shirt and jacket;
- Sweatproof and waterproof sun lotion with
UVA and UVB protection with an SPF factor no less than 15
is a must;
- The lighter your skin the higher the SPF
factor, such as a 30;
- Reapply sun lotion every hour and after
each dive;
- Be aware if you are taking any photosensitizing
medication while on your dive trip, such as tetracycline and
retin-A for acne;
- Avoid prolonged exposure between
10am and 3pm when the ultraviolet rays are the most intense
and harmful.
Instruction -
by Jason
R. Houle PADI Master Instructor
When teaching a Divemaster or assistant instructor course you
will find that the Padi slates are invaluable for recording
student presentations. These slates are an investment in your
dive career but are fragile if precautions are not taken early.
To ensure that you don't break or damage your slates simply
get a plastic cutting (bread) board. Lay the slate on top of
the board and drill and hole in corner. Then take a quick tye
(tye wrap, zip tie) and secure the slate to the board. This
gives you a strong and very effective slate for teaching. Why
not be creative and get a blue, red or yellow board from Ikea?
Skills and Safety -
by Tyler
Clair MSDT
Practice your diving more by diving. Dive with a buddy you trust,
dive with a group you trust, dive with an operator you have
researched and trust. Just dive more and you will become a better
diver. Please always remember common sense and our speed limit.
Never exceed 1 foot per second on ascent.
Equipment -
by Alec
Peirce
One of the most common practical problems we face is finding
a convenient method to attach the console to our BC. On a spearfishing
trip to Florida, I tried one of the recoil devices which clips
to my BC and attaches to the side of the console. Of all the
different ways I've used to hold my console this was the very
best by a long shot. The console was always in exactly the same
spot when I reached for it, it was easy to pull out to any length
so I could read the gauges or use the compass and it instantly
returned to it's proper spot when I let go. It also never fell
down between my legs, banged around when entering the water
or caught on rocks or the wrecks as I swam through them. Try
it. It may be the perfect solution for you too. |
